Fears of an aviation trade war eased after the European Union offered to abandon attempts to apply its rules for curbing emissions outside its airspace in exchange for international co-operation to set up a global scheme.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel put the brakes on a deal to lease the city's Midway Airport because one of the two bidders dropped out, a spokeswoman for the mayor said, reported Reuters.
