Air China became the latest Chinese carrier to announce an earnings hit from foreign-exchange losses, higher fuel costs and slowing demand for air travel as it reported a 77 percent drop in its first-half net profit.



New service for Toyota production in Vladivostok
A new container carrier route between Japan's Aichi Prefecture and Russia's Vladivostok will open next year to service Toyota Motor Corp's vehicle production in the Russian Far Eastern city, prefectural officials said, reported Kyodo News.



Maersk sees no Europe Christmas season
China's exports to Europe have remained weak during the traditional peak season for shipping, but the country's trade with the US appears to have more traction, according to the chief executive officer of Maersk Lines.





China Southern first half profit plunges 85%

China Southern Airlines' first-half net profit fell 85 percent from a year earlier due to high fuel costs and foreign exchange losses, and it expects a challenging second half because of intensifying domestic competition and the weak global economy.



Air India to take delivery of first Dreamliner this week
Air India is set to take delivery this week its first Boeing 787 Dreamliner after a wait of some four years and following a long, public battle between the airline and the jet maker over compensation for the delayed planes.

Negotiations between German labur union UFO and Deutsche Lufthansa have broken down, and the union will call a strike, a person familiar with the matter told Dow Jones Newswires.



Poaching pays off for Virgin Australia
Virgin Australia swung to a full-year profit amid efforts to poach premium customers from Qantas Airways, reported Dow Jones Newswires. Net profit for the year to June 30 of US$23.6 million compared to a $70.



Retailers brace for US port disruption
US retailers could be forced within days to find alternative ways to import goods unless the threat of a strike by domestic dockworkers at ports stretching from Maine to Texas lifts, the sector's main lobby group warned, reported Dow Jones Newswires.
