...uncertainty over Dakar
Doubt has been cast on the DP World concession to operate Dakar container terminal. The former Senegalese president's son, Karim Wade, is being investigated by the country's anti-corruption prosecutor for gaining his estimated U$1.5B fortune by illegal means, including the acquisition of equity in DP World Dakar, which is the Gulf firm's local operating subsidiary. Wade was a member of the government when the concession was awarded. The case appears to be serious because the chairman of DP World, Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, flew to Paris to holds talks on the matter with Senegal's President Macky Sall....

New chance for feeder barge?
The Port Feeder Barge concept designed several years ago by Bremen University's Prof Dr Ing Ulrich Malchow for Elbe River navigation (see WorldCargo News, August 2007, p28) could see the light of day in the Port of Hamburg. The chaotic traffic conditions with chronic congestion on the roads within and around the port area call for an alternative transport mode. Making use of the many canals and tributaries of the Elbe River would be an ideal alternative for container transportation within the port, it is claimed....
